Especially when leaving involves vacation,
Offers the possibility and function of altering our
Perception and experience of time passage.
When planning a trip, time stalls in anticipation,
Then rushes toward the scheduled departure.
Similar process during duration of the vacation:
Time lags and lolls, then turns a corner, rushing away.
For children, time feels endless, especially summer vacation.
As we age, when we value and need every single moment,
Time climbs abroad a speeding freight train and leaves town,
Leaving us breathless in the dust, wondering where time went.
Teens, with all the time in the world, drive speedily.
Older people, with time running out, creep slowly,
Both by foot and car, cherishing each step and mile,
As though thieves had pillaged sand from all hourglasses.
Although time is uncontrollable, our perception of time offers
Choices in our relationship with minutes, hours, years, decades.
Rather than living in memory or regret, rather than living in
Anticipation or anxiety, time slows as we pause in the present.
Awareness of beauty, natural surroundings, all five/six senses,
Provide orientation and location in each moment each day.
Vacations remind us to access and use our capacities for relaxation.
The best vacation souvenir is our capacity to remember to be.
